[ Gumdrops.

The gumdrop fae dances above their heads, the bells at it collar chiming happily as it twirls, solidifying its enchantment. Instead of being free to continue on their way to the smithy and the much-needed warmth of its forge, they now stand together, caught. As lucky as they are to be trapped in an area that is relatively private along the side of a building, it is still outdoors. Fine, powdery snow falls about them, hoth dusting her hair and outerwear and quieting all of their surroundings. It is only them.

Somnus is aware of what the mistletoe-gumdrop means and what the enchantment asks. Still, he tests the strength of the barrier about them, lifting a hand in a loose fist and rapping the back of his knuckles against an invisible wall. Slowly, he lowers his arm back to his side, allowing it to disappear beneath his heavy cloak. One would think that in all of his years in this dream realm, he would have become an expert in avoiding these seasonal slugs-like creatures; and, for the past few seasons, he had managed to escape the devious fae's entrapments. Unfortunately for him, his luck seems to have finally run out, and who else is trapped with him but a certain young, Hylian woman.

At last, he turns his head to regard her. His gaze holds hers evenly, but ever briefly does it falter-- flitting down to her lips-- then back up. ]

Daughter of Hyrule.

[ There is hesitance and urgency, stiff and polite remorse for their circumstance betrayed in his voice. It is a tone he swiftly corrects, beginning again as formality smooths over his tone. ]

We may wait, if you wish.

[ It's cold, but the option to simply wait out the gumdrop is there. It seems the last thing he desires is for her to feel uncomfortable.

(The gumdrop, meanwhile, begins to coo "kisssss", "you gotta kissss", above them, humming along to a wintertime carol.) ]

[ She's already leaning in towards him, lifting her chin and closing her eyes in anticipation of a kiss. Her heart begins to pound, and a warm feeling spreads through her when she feels the heat of his breath on her mouth. So close... Just a little further--

...

And then nothing. Further never arrives.

What's worse, instead of a kiss, he reminds her of the lateness of the hour. (In a low tone of voice that does absolutely nothing to temper her growing want.)

Green eyes open and she looks up at him with a look of clear disappointment. She's only asking for a kiss, just one moment more before they have to leave. It's a limit she meant to hold herself to, really!

She could have simply ignored him and kissed him herself (and Goddess, how she wanted to), but he's right. (She hates that he's right.) The hour is late. She has been out far longer than she told Link she would be. Were Reverein not such a safe place, he would no doubt be worried about her by now. Any longer and he might come searching for her.

Interrupting her and Somnus mid-kiss is not how she wants Link to find out about them.

So she capitulates, heaving a dramatic sigh as she forces herself away from him. ]

It is. [ She makes only a passing effort to hide the disappointment in her voice. It's not very successful. ] We had best be off before the weather worsens.

[ Fortunately, having him escort her home assuages most of Zelda's ruffled feelings by the time they reach her doorstep. She manages to bid him goodnight without asking for one last kiss, stamping down the budding worry that once she steps inside the house, she's going to wake up in her bed and realize this was all just a dream. She doesn't --thank all the gods in heaven-- and gives herself a moment to sag with relief against the closed door.

What a day. And she still has to find a way to tell it all (well, some) to Link. It's probably going to be a long night. ]
